There are 6 main sectors in the drilling industry that all undertake basically the same task but in different locations and for different reasons. The 6 main sectors include:

Blasthole drilling:
These types of offshore drilling jobs involve using explosives to remove ore and rock in mines and quarries. Also used in the construction of capital works, roadworks, and dam sites. Deep holes are made with the drills for the placing of explosives used.

Mineral investigation and exploration drilling:
This drilling is carried out in Australia and other places around the world for the purpose of investigating areas that are suspected or known to have mineral deposits.

Gas and Offshore Drilling Jobs:
This type of drilling is carried out onshore and offshore for the extraction of oil and gas. Contract companies that have been employed by the Oil Company carry this out.

Site geo-technical or investigation drilling:
This drilling is conducted for the main purpose of determining rock and soil characteristics. These are mainly carried out on construction sites.

Construction and foundation drilling:
This type of drilling is used to make holes for rock bolting, piers and contiguous piers for areas that include construction sites around cities and towns.

Water well drilling:
Private contractors carry out this type of drilling in rural areas.
