How to get offshore oil jobs aboard oil rigs
If you have any questions on offshore oil jobs, you can email us on info@oil-industry-jobs.com
To
successfully find a job in the oil and gas industry, you need to be prepared
to work hard. It is not the easiest of jobs, however you can earn excellent
salaries working in the industry.
The easiest way to obtain offshore oil jobs is to have previous experience.
Obviously though, a lot of people wanting to get into the industry have
no previous experience, so a willingness to prove yourself as worthy is
necessary. If you are fortunate enough to know someone who works at a
particular oil or gas rig installation, you could ask them to put in a
good word for you. The company is likely to hire a person if known and
recommended by another employee.
However - don't despair if you are in the situation of not having
anyone to recommend you. The majority of people who now have offshore
oil jobs were once in the same predicament. In this case, the
best way to get into the industry is to start at the bottom of
the ladder and work your way up. The entry level position is typically
that of roustabout. When applying for roustabout jobs, be sure
to mention specific skills or related study or experience that
may be relevant to the position you are seeking. While the roustabout
position is at the foot of the ladder, the job still pays well
and you will have the added advantage of learning the industry
from the bottom up, which should help your prospects of advancing
your career in future.
If you can't - or don't want to - get employment as a roustabout, you
should consider applying for offshore oil jobs in a position such as a
catering assistant. Once you have got your foot on the rig or installation,
the company will keep a good eye on you, as they are keen to promote employees
from within the company where possible. They will monitor your performance
on the job, including such facets as whether you have the necessary skills
and expertise, and whether you have a continued willingness to be away
from home for long periods of time in a demanding physical environment.
Taking all these factors into account, you may be offered another position
on the oil rig.
Having existing trade skills can be useful to you when applying for jobs,
as it means the company may not need to train you as much. This said however,
there are some oil companies out there who are willing to employ people
in roustabout positions - even if they have no previous offshore oil experience
or a trade.
