What to expect when working on offshore oil rigs

The following guide is intended to give you an indication of how to prepare for, and adjust to life during jobs on offshore oil rigs or when employed in gas industry jobs.

Once you have secured employment and all the contractual side of things is sorted out, the oil company will give you the name and directions to a heliport, which will take you to the oil rig. Arrive early especially on the first time as you don't know what to expect. Look for the information on your offshore oil rigs flight, this will usually be displayed on a television screen otherwise ask a member of staff. Once you know what is happening you can relax until your flight is called. The following information is also applicable for some gas industry jobs.

Your flying time could be three hours or more so make sure that you have eaten had a drink and have been to the bathroom before you hop onto the helicopter. You will be called to check in your baggage some time before you proceed to the departure lounge. When your flight is called you are only allowed to carry reading material onto the helicopter. Mobile phones should be switched off and may quite possibly taken from you before you get onto the helicopter.

A security guard will search you for many things including weapons including knives, matches and lighters. They will not let you board with them or if they believe you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. After putting on the survival suit and life jacket provided you should us the ear plugs and or protectors. Until you arrive at the rig you should stay on the seat you were in unless told otherwise.

Life Working on Offshore Oil Rigs
- You will be issued with safety boots hard hat safety glasses and coveralls.
- Keep a good attitude and be focused on why you wanted to work offshore.
- There are smoking rooms at various places on a rig where safety matches will be supplied.
- For meals you take off your work gear and eat in the galley.
- You may have to work a night shift or two as an oil rig is a 24 hour operation.
- Don't upset the radio operator, medic or chef. Helicopters, medical attention and food are most important.
