There
are a vast number of different types of occupations involved in the operation
of an oil rig. The person in charge of the exploration operations is the geologist.
It is their responsibility to analyze and interpret the information that has been
gathered. They work in offices and on site where they interpret seismic data and
study geological maps. Other people who have oil exploration jobs as part of the
initial operation include: - Photogeologists interpret aerial photographs
of the surfaces chosen area. - Palaeontologists will locate oil by studying
fossil remainders. - Mineralogists examine and study the chemical and physical
properties of rock and mineral samples - Stratigraphers study rock layers
to determine the location of natural gas and oil - Drafters and surveyors
help in mapping activities and surveying. There are other people with oil
exploration jobs, and these include geophysical prospectors. They head up the
team that includes: - Seismic and gravity observers will look after the
maintenance and operation of the electronic seismic gear. - Scouts will study
the leasing, drilling and exploration activities to help find promising exploration
areas. - Lease buyers make the necessary arrangements with the landowner for
the use of the land and mineral rights. - Petroleum engineers supervise and
plan the drill operation when a promising area has been found. They will then
work out the best way to achieve maximum oil or gas recovery in the most efficient
and cost effective way. They will also organize the well maintenance and operation.
- Superintendents act as a supervisor for overseeing oilrigs and drilling teams.
- The Rotary drilling team is made up of about 5 people who operate machinery
controlling pressure and speed. They also supervise the rest of the crew.
- Rotary rig operators take care of the engine machines that control power for
hoisting and drilling. - Derrick operators are second in charge and have important
oil exploration jobs. They will work on high platforms on the oilrig and from
there they will control and oversee the operation of the pipe in the well holes,
the pumps that move the mud through piping. - Roughnecks or Rotary drill
helpers help with the guidance of the pipe in the well openings and will connect
drill bits and piping joints. - General laborers and roustabouts take care
of the general maintenance on board an oilrig. They will do tasks that include
